What Discount / Sale Price Calculator does, with a checked example

Enter an original price and either a single discount percentage or a sequence of percentage discounts. The calculator reports the reduced price and how much the buyer saves compared with the original amount. Stacked discounts are applied one after another to the remaining balance. They are not simply added together: a 20% discount followed by 10% leaves 72% of the original price, producing an effective discount of 28%, not 30%.

Worked example

A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.

Final price: $54.00
Total savings: $26.00

The first discount reduces $80.00 to $60.00. The second removes 10% of $60.00, or $6.00, leaving $54.00; $80.00 minus $54.00 gives $26.00 in total savings.

How the result is produced

Single discount

For one discount, the entered percentage is divided by 100 and multiplied by the original price to find the savings. With original price P and discount d, savings equal P x d/100, while the sale price equals P x (1 - d/100). The two resulting amounts should add back to the original price.

Stacked discounts

Each stacked percentage applies to the price left by the preceding discount. For two discounts, the final price is P x (1 - d1/100) x (1 - d2/100). Additional discounts add more factors. Reordering percentage-only discounts leaves the same mathematical final price, although cent rounding at individual steps can sometimes affect a retailer's total.

Good uses

  • Checking the shelf price of an item advertised at a specific percentage off.
  • Comparing one large discount with a promotion that stacks two smaller percentage discounts.
  • Finding both the reduced price and the dollar savings for a sale budget.

Limits and checks

  • All monetary entries must use the same currency because the calculation does not perform currency conversion.
  • A stacked result assumes every percentage applies sequentially; store exclusions, coupon caps, and fixed-dollar offers require separate treatment.
  • A retailer may round each item or discount step to the nearest cent, creating a small difference from a calculation rounded only at the end.

Common questions

Can I add stacked discount percentages together?

No. A 30% discount followed by 20% does not equal 50% off. The first leaves 70% of the price, and the second leaves 80% of that remainder. Multiplying 0.70 by 0.80 leaves 56% of the original price, so the effective discount is 44%.

Does the final price include sales tax, shipping, or fixed-dollar coupons?

No, not from percentage-discount inputs alone. The result represents the original price after the specified percentage reductions. Sales tax, shipping charges, fees, and coupons such as $5 off require additional calculations. Their order can matter because a seller may apply them before or after discounts according to its own rules.
