What Dimensional Analysis Tool does, with a checked example
Build a conversion as a row of labeled fractions, beginning with the measured quantity and ending with the requested unit. The Dimensional Analysis Tool carries the numbers through the chain and highlights unit labels that cancel between numerators and denominators, so the surviving dimension is visible before the result is used. It is suited to multiplicative unit conversions with one or several factors. The common mistake is reversing a conversion factor: its orientation must place the unwanted unit opposite the same unit in the current expression.
Worked example
A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.
Input
Starting quantity: 60 mi/h
Factor 1: 5280 ft / 1 mi
Factor 2: 1 h / 3600 s
->
The units mi and h cancel from opposite sides of the fractions. The numerical calculation is 60 * 5280 / 3600 = 88, leaving ft/s.
