What Dice Roller does and how it behaves

Dice Roller produces random face values for one or more virtual dice, with side counts from d4 through d100. Select the quantity and number of sides, add an optional modifier, and roll; the tool totals the faces and records previous outcomes in its roll history. The modifier applies to the combined subtotal, not to each die. This distinction often explains totals that fall outside the unmodified minimum or maximum for the selected dice.

Dice and modifier arithmetic

Set the number of dice, choose a side count from d4 through d100, and provide a modifier if needed. For n dice with s sides, the roller produces n face values from 1 through s. Their subtotal ranges from n through n x s. Adding modifier m shifts the possible final range to n + m through n x s + m.

Repeated rolls and history

Rolling again creates a new random outcome for the selected configuration, so matching settings do not imply matching totals. Roll history records earlier outcomes for comparison during the current activity. It is not a probability summary: a short sequence can contain repeated faces, omit many possible faces, or appear uneven without demonstrating that later rolls will compensate.

Good uses

  • Resolve a tabletop game check that calls for several same-sided dice plus a bonus or penalty.
  • Generate a d100 result for selecting an entry from a numbered random-event or encounter table.
  • Run repeated classroom trials to compare observed dice totals with their mathematically possible range.

Limits and checks

  • The same input does not have one predictable output. Repeating a configuration can produce different individual faces and a different total.
  • The advertised side-count range is d4 through d100. It does not establish support for d2, d3, weighted dice, nonnumeric faces, or special percentile-dice conventions.
  • Read the modifier separately from the rolled faces. A modified total may exceed the dice subtotal's natural maximum or fall below its natural minimum without any invalid face result.

Common questions

Why can the total be outside the normal range of the dice?

With n dice and s sides, the unmodified subtotal can only run from n to n x s. The modifier is then added to that subtotal, so a positive modifier can push the final total above n x s and a negative one can push it below n. That does not mean any individual die rolled an impossible face.

Can I use these rolls for a secure or independently audited drawing?

No such assurance follows from an ordinary browser dice result. The roller is suitable for games, quick simulations, and informal decisions, but its output should not be assumed to satisfy cryptographic, gambling, regulatory, or audit requirements. For a consequential drawing, use a method whose random source, procedure, and recordkeeping have been independently validated for that purpose.
