What Cryptocurrency Converter does, with a checked example

The Cryptocurrency Converter applies a price you choose to a cryptocurrency quantity, showing the corresponding fiat amount and, when acquisition and current prices are provided, the holding's value and gain or loss. It can also combine holdings into a portfolio total. A custom price is an input assumption, not proof of a live or executable exchange quote. Price direction matters: USD per BTC is not interchangeable with BTC per USD.

Worked example

A concrete input and expected output from the current implementation.

Input

Asset: BTC
Amount: 0.25 BTC
Acquisition price: 50,000 USD per BTC
Custom current price: 64,000 USD per BTC

Expected output

Current value: 16,000 USD
Cost basis: 12,500 USD
Gain: 3,500 USD
Gain percentage: 28%

The current value is 0.25 x 64,000 = 16,000 USD, while the cost basis is 0.25 x 50,000 = 12,500 USD. The gain is 3,500 USD, and 3,500 divided by 12,500 equals 28%.

How the result is produced

1

Conversion direction

When the quote is expressed as fiat per coin, multiplying a coin quantity by that quote gives its fiat value. For the reverse conversion, dividing a fiat amount by the same quote gives the coin quantity. A USD-per-BTC quote therefore supports both BTC-to-USD and USD-to-BTC calculations, provided the amount and price units are interpreted in the correct direction.

2

Holding performance

For a holding, cost basis is the quantity multiplied by its acquisition price, while current value is the quantity multiplied by the comparison price. Gain or loss is current value minus cost basis. Percentage gain or loss is that difference divided by cost basis. A zero cost basis cannot produce a meaningful percentage, although an absolute value difference may still be calculable.

Good uses

  • Value 0.037 BTC in USD using a price copied from a particular exchange or transaction record.
  • Compare a coin's acquisition price with a custom current price to estimate the holding's gain or loss.
  • Express several cryptocurrency balances in one fiat currency and review their combined portfolio value.

Limits and checks

  • Confirm whether the entered quote means fiat per coin or coin per fiat unit; reversing it produces a reciprocal result.
  • Custom prices can become stale and may differ across exchanges, trading pairs, and execution times.
  • A calculated gain or loss may not represent net proceeds or taxable gain because fees, spreads, and tax-lot rules require separate treatment.

Common questions

Is the custom price a live exchange quote?

No. A result based on a custom price reflects the number entered into the converter. It does not establish that an exchange currently offers that price or that an order could execute there. For a time-sensitive valuation, copy a recent quote from the relevant market and verify its currency, trading pair, and timestamp.

Does the displayed gain or loss equal my taxable gain?

No, not necessarily. The arithmetic compares the entered acquisition value with the entered current value. Tax calculations may depend on transaction fees, multiple purchase lots, disposal history, accounting method, jurisdiction, and the value at the time of each taxable event. Treat the converter's result as a valuation check, not a completed tax record.
