This tool builds a crossword from the answers and clues you type in. You enter each answer with its clue; the tool fits the answers into a letter grid, running across and down, so that any two words that cross agree on the letter in the shared square. It then numbers every entry and presents the grid beside the Across and Down clue lists. The usual surprise: not every word you type is guaranteed a place. A word can only sit where it shares a letter with another word in the list, so answers that share letters with nothing else get left out, or the grid comes out sparse.
Every word runs either across or down, and two entries may share a square only when both place the same letter there, meaning the shared letter sits at the same position within both answers. Words are placed one at a time where they can cross an already placed word, and unused squares become blocked. A word with no letter in common with the rest of the list has no crossing point.
Every entry takes its number from the position of its first square, counted row by row from the top-left corner, which is the usual crossword convention. A square that starts both an across and a down entry carries one number used by both clues. The tool then presents the two clue lists, Across and Down, beside the numbered grid, so each printed number links a clue to the entry it describes.
Not necessarily. A word is placed only where it can cross another word on a shared letter, and only if a compatible spot exists when its turn comes. Words that share no letters with the rest of the list are the usual casualties. If something is missing, try reordering the list, adding a bridging word, or dropping the word that refuses to fit.
No. The tool produces the grid and the numbering; the clues come from you. That is what makes the puzzle custom: definitions, puns, or personal references only your intended solvers understand. If you have an answer but no clue for it, write something, however simple, because an entry with no clue cannot be solved from the grid alone.
