Drop an image into the page and the tool converts it into a color-by-number template: similar colors merge into numbered regions, each filled with one flat color, with a legend that maps every number to its swatch. All processing happens in the page, so the image never leaves it. The result is a worksheet you fill in by hand with crayons or markers. The usual surprise is that photographs make poor templates - smooth gradients either shatter into dozens of tiny regions or wash into unrecognizable shapes - while flat, high-contrast illustrations with few colors convert cleanly. The number of colors you allow is the main knob controlling difficulty.

Color quantization

The image is reduced to a limited palette: pixels close in color are grouped, and each group gets one representative color and one number. That grouping is what turns a photograph or illustration into flat, fillable shapes. The palette's size determines how aggressively colors merge - fewer colors means larger regions and a simpler puzzle, with more detail lost. Fine lines and small text disappear first.

Numbering and legend

The template shows each numbered region as a flat fill with its number placed inside where space allows. A legend lists every number with its color swatch, making the worksheet self-contained: read a number, pick that swatch, and fill the matching regions. Regions too small for a readable label either lose their number or merge into a neighbor, which is where the smallest detail of the original image goes.

Limits and checks

  • Photographs convert badly. Continuous gradients force the color grouping to either flatten shading into large blank shapes or shatter into many tiny regions with near-identical colors. Flat illustrations with clear outlines and a few distinct colors are what this process handles well.
  • Regions are color groups, not objects. A white shirt and a white wall can merge into one region because they share a number; you cannot pick out individual objects, only influence grouping through the palette size.
  • Screen colors are not print colors. Swatches that look clearly distinct on a monitor can come out nearly identical on paper because display and printer color ranges differ, so verify the legend against real supplies before printing a batch.

Common questions

Can I upload a photo instead of an illustration?

You can, but expect a rough result. Photos contain continuous gradients and noise, which the color grouping must flatten, so you typically get either many tiny regions with near-identical colors or large washed-out shapes. Flat, high-contrast pictures with a few distinct colors produce the cleanest worksheets. If a photo is the only option, choose one with bold colors and a simple background.

Will the numbers match a standard set of crayons or markers?

No. The palette is generated from the image itself, so the swatches are whatever colors the picture happens to contain, not a fixed lineup such as an 8-pack or a 24-pack. You check the legend and gather matching supplies yourself, and near-duplicate swatches may need a marker you have to hunt for. The legend exists precisely so you can do that check before starting.
