What 3D Business Card Mockup does and how it behaves

Before printing, a card design deserves to be seen as an object rather than a rectangle. This tool places your artwork onto cards in three 3D scenes - a stack, a fan, and a scattered spread - so the design is previewed the way it will actually be encountered. You supply the artwork; the tool draws the card surfaces in perspective. What surprises most people is that the mockup doubles as a legibility test: perspective compresses the artwork, and small type or fine detail that looks fine in a flat export can become unreadable when the card is tilted.

Three preset scenes

The same design is rendered in three arrangements: cards stacked in a pile, fanned out in an arc, and scattered with each card at its own position and angle. Every scene draws the card surfaces in perspective, so the artwork is foreshortened and reads differently from one arrangement to the next. The artwork itself is not altered; only its presentation changes.

Rendered in the browser

The scenes are drawn locally from the image you provide; nothing is uploaded to a server, which matters when the artwork carries a client's logo or unpublished branding. Because cards are drawn from an angle rather than straight on, horizontal proportions compress along the receding axis, mimicking how a card looks held in the hand or lying on a table. That compression is deliberate.

Good uses

  • Present a card design to a client or reviewer as a finished object: a stacked or fanned scene reads like a product shot rather than a file, which helps with approvals and portfolio pieces.
  • Catch legibility problems before printing: check that the logo, name, and contact details still read clearly when the card is seen tilted, at arm's length, or partly covered by other cards.
  • Compare one design across the three arrangements to see which presentation shows it best, for example whether a busy back panel holds up in a scattered scene.

Limits and checks

  • Not a print proof. The render is a screen approximation: colors and contrast follow the display, not CMYK or spot-color printing, and finishes such as embossing, foil, or texture are not represented. Use it for composition and presentation; get physical proofs for color decisions.
  • Occlusion and foreshortening. In a stack, upper cards hide the ones below; in every scene the perspective compresses the artwork. Judging exact spacing or fine detail from the angled render will mislead. Judge proportions from the artwork itself, not its tilted rendering.
  • Card ratios differ by region. A US card is 3.5 x 2 inches, a 1.75:1 ratio (1050 x 600 px at 300 DPI). The common metric card is 85 x 55 mm, about 1.55:1 (roughly 1004 x 650 px at 300 DPI). A design whose ratio is far from card proportions will not read the way it would once printed to a standard size.

Common questions

Will the preview colors match what the printer produces?

No. The mockup renders on your screen, and no screen shows print color accurately: CMYK conversion, ink limits, paper tint, and finishes are not reproduced. Use the preview to judge composition, hierarchy, and legibility, and request physical proofs for any color-critical decision.

The card in the preview looks compressed compared to my flat file - is something wrong?

Almost certainly not. The scenes draw cards in perspective, so the artwork is foreshortened and scaled to the scene's depth; that is the intended effect of a 3D mockup, and the flat file remains unchanged. If you need true proportions, measure the artwork itself. Also check that your image matches a standard card ratio, since odd ratios sit awkwardly on standard card shapes.
